ALM Webinars

The ALM Webinar are a series of four webinars that will be delivered over a two-week period in a two-day format. Whether you are new to credit unions and Asset/Liability Management (ALM) or you want to increase your knowledge, this webinar series will discuss the concepts of ALM and provide tools and techniques to manage your credit union's ALM process more effectively.

The content of each series has been developed to act as a stand-alone or you can attend Series I and II consecutively. Series I will equip attendees with foundational concepts and goals of ALM as well as best practices. Therefore if you have a basic understanding of ALM and are confident in your knowledge, you might decide to start with Series II. However, suppose you are new to the credit union, or your job responsibilities now involve ALM. In that case, you will want to start with Series I followed by Series II, and participate in all four webinars consecutively. In Series II, attendees will explore advanced topics of ALM including interest rate risk, elements of an ALM Policy and an Investment Policy, and procedures for an Asset Liability Committee (ALCO).

To participate in all four webinars, please register for Series I and Series II. The webinars will be recorded, and you will have access to them for 45 days. 

Series I

Webinar #1: Building Blocks of ALM

This webinar is designed to build a solid foundation of the basic concepts of asset/liability management. The session will begin with a discussion of the goals of ALM, which include the key operational areas of earnings, capital, liquidity, and entry-level interest-rate risk. It will include a review of the key ratio analysis report that the Cornerstone League provides its members, illustrate how to monitor the regulatory communications provided by NCUA, and review the components of the risk-focused exam.

Webinar #2: ALM Best Practices

9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. CT

Using the key concepts of ALM discussed in the first webinar, this session will dive deeper into identifying how to manage earnings and, more specifically, spread. Topics of discussion will include the mechanics and practices to ensure appropriate pricing of products and provide the ability to monitor the credit union's financial condition on a monthly basis. The content will outline the key ratios, including the calculation of the 13 key ratios identified in webinar number one, and highlight the impact factors for each ratio. Please have a calculator for this webinar.

Series II

Webinar #3: GAP - A Short-Term Interest Rate Risk Measurement

This webinar will discuss interest rate risk: what it is, why it impacts the credit union, and why NCUA requires regular monitoring. This session will review the entry-level measurement of GAP and include the calculation of the credit union's GAP position. Please have a calculator available for this webinar. 

Webinar #4: Organizing an ALM Process

9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. CT

This webinar will review an ALM checklist including a discussion of items to incorporate or update the credit union's ALM process. The session will highlight the elements of an ALM Policy and an Investment Policy, review a liquidity analysis to identify and support liquidity needs, discuss who can serve on an Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), as well as processes and procedures for the ALCO.

In her role as ALM & financial analysis director at Cornerstone League, Margot Strong works with credit unions to provide analysis, instruction, and guidance in the area of asset liability management to help facilitate their financial well-being. Strong has more than 20 years of experience in business development and more than 10 years of experience working with credit unions while at Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union and ALM First.
