Six takeaways for credit unions planning their current workspaces

Workplace Design as a Strategic Capital Management Tool reviews results from an online experiment where working-age adults rated the quality of different workspaces based on the number of flexible workspace options. This Filene report shares six key takeaways that you can incorporate into your strategic plan when designing workplace projects.

  1. Think beyond the open office debate, combining some form of private workspace with a number of different collaborative workspaces.
  2. Flexibility is not a replacement for personalization, so consider keeping assigned workspaces that can be personalized by the employee.
  3. Flexibility should reflect work tasks. Invest time in understanding work tasks and align effective spaces to accommodate each function.
  4. Consider generational differences. Younger workers may see flexibility in workspaces as an employer differentiator, while more experienced workers may have more specific expectations about workspace design.
  5. Pay attention to attracting and keeping talent and don’t assume that factors that attract talent will be the same factors that retain talent.
  6. Align workspace and culture, creating more flexible workspaces to help recruit talent and foster a culture that encourages their use.
