Four credit unions spent a few important hours at Credit Union of America’s headquarters for Grassroots Day in Wichita on Nov. 20: Credit Union of America, Meritrust Credit Union, Heartland Credit Union, and Catholic Family Federal Credit Union.
Grassroots Day is an exceptional event for leveling up on your advocacy skills and gaining knowledge about the legislative process. As in other Grassroots Days, the Wichita agenda included a brief history of credit unions, current events affecting the
industry, messaging and talking points for credit unions, and what to expect while advocating at the state and federal levels.
In addition, attendees enjoyed a luncheon and an hour-long fireside-style chat with Kansas state Sen. Michael Fagg (R-District 14). He is the chair of the Senate Committee on Utilities and the vice chair of the Senate Committee on Financial Institutions
and Insurance.
Kansas Credit Union Association Executive Director Michael Murray joined the senator in the proverbial hot seat while KSCUA PAC and Grassroots Coordinator Emily Beam moderated with questions about successful practices for advocacy, real-life examples of what has or hasn’t worked in the past, and what the process looks like for legislative actions. The session was interactive, and the audience asked many questions.
