InTouch Credit Union
hosted U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas, District 3) at its main office in Plano last week. Self is serving his first term in Congress and serves on the committees for Veterans and Foreign Affairs.
After brief introductions, the congressman expressed his concerns about inflation and the American middle class. He said the middle class is being “hallowed out” and “cannot sustain the entire economy.”
Credit union attendees described the various programs they offer to assist members in need, such as loans for members impacted by the wildfires in Hawaii and other hardship loans.
Self discussed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s rulemaking and asked how it affects credit unions and their operations. Kent Lugrand, CEO of InTouch CU, said his credit union has had to add several risk officers to keep up with new compliance burdens.
Credit union leaders told the congressman that their members are being hit by fraud of all types, and that fraudsters are getting more sophisticated. They expressed their concerns for opening up credit interchange to untested networks via the Credit Card Competition Act, which could greatly increase the risk of breaches and fraud.
Self thanked the credit unions for their service to members in the third congressional district and asked that credit unions contact him with concerns about government overreach.
