On Sept. 15, Rep. Rafael Anchía (D-District 103) visited the leadership and board of directors of Dallas-based Resource One Credit Union for their September board meeting.

Anchía is a 9-term member of the Texas House of Representatives and represents a western corridor of Dallas County. In the Texas Legislature, he serves as the chairman of the House Committee on Pensions, Investments, and Financial Services, as well as a member of the Energy Resources and the Redistricting committees. Most recently, Anchía was appointed to serve on the Texas Privacy Protection Advisory Council.

During the meeting, Anchía encouraged everyone to participate in the upcoming election. He also spoke about a ballot measure to increase the hotel occupancy tax to support projects in and around Fair Park.

Janey Appia, board director and PAC chairwoman, said, “One of the items on the agenda was an overview of the community work that Yolanda Woodson has done over the year and the presence of the R1CU brand that has helped build alliances within the communities we serve.”

Appia said the meeting was very important, especially to the PAC Committee, since a state representative had never spoken to the R1CU board. Appia attributed the conception of a PAC committee to Board Chair Karen Hart.

“We are very proud of having this committee,” Appia said.

In attendance at the meeting with Anchía were:

  • Karen Hart, Chairman
  • Mary Beth Spuck, CEO
  • Craig Gant, Secretary
  • Keith Willson, Director
  • Greg Blunt, Director
  • Cliff Broughton, Director
  • Janey Appia, Director and PAC Chairwoman
  • Andy Olivo, Associate Volunteer Member
  • Bruce Archer, Associate Volunteer Member
  • Lenora King, Associate Volunteer Member
  • Doug Bedner, R1CU
  • Yolonda Woodson, R1CU
  • Merrill Currier, R1CU
  • Tracey Jackson, R1CU
  • Brady Popp, R1CU

Also in attendance, on behalf of Cornerstone League, was The Honorable Larry Gonzales, a former Texas House member who represented District 52. Gonzales presented a PAC check to Anchía.

Gonzales said, “I have been doing this for a long time, and that was by far one of the best events I’ve ever been a part of.”

Gonzales also said Anchía was extremely pleased, impressed, and grateful for how smoothly everything went and how engaged everyone was during his visit.

Feedback from attendees about the event was also very positive.

“It was a most inspiring event,” said Bruce Archer, associate volunteer member and former mayor of Mesquite, Texas. “I am very encouraged that our organization has a combined theme of growing local economies, honoring hard work, and empowering people to have greater control over their destinies by better access to financial services. In addition, the community contribution part of the equation, such as financial literacy opportunities and uplifting lower-income areas of communities will yield long-term economic hope and opportunity for all. Bravo!”
