At Cornerstone League, advocacy never rests. In December, when most elected officials return to their home districts for the holidays, Cornerstone’s engagement pros seize the opportunities to meet with credit union leaders and lawmakers on a more informal basis.

Often, the primary purpose of these meetings is to deliver CULAC checks, but this more intimate engagement is also a great way to enhance relationships with lawmakers who are pro-credit union and look favorably upon credit union interests. That’s why it’s also important that credit union leaders attend these meetings whenever possible.

Arkansas

Arkansas Credit Union Association Executive Director Vicky Salkeld Dahinden and Grassroots Director Skeeter Brosius met separately with U.S. Rep. French Hill (R-Ark.) and U.S. Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.) in Little Rock.

UP Federal Credit Union CEO Karyn Davis joined Salkeld to meet with Hill and Boozman, and Electric Cooperatives Federal Credit Union CEO Windy Campbell attended the Boozman meeting, along with contract lobbyist Ann Clemmer.

Salkeld reports that both Hill and Boozman gave an update on what is going on at the nation’s capital.

“We discussed the latest developments on the IRS reporting issue and talked at length about the impact the economy and supply chain issues are having on credit union lending,” Salkeld said. “These meetings are the perfect opportunity to foster beneficial relationships between lawmakers and their credit union constituents.”

Oklahoma

On Dec. 11, Oklahoma Credit Union Association Executive Director Nate Webb was welcomed to the home of Pam and Mike Kloiber (Tinker FCU), along with U.S. Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla).

Webb also met with Congressman Tom Cole, from Oklahoma’s 4th district, on Jan. 5.
