Making progress, one step at a time

Posted: Mar 4, 2021 | Author: Cornerstone League

This week’s Leaguer touches on the theme of progress, whether in one’s professional microsphere, or in the larger community. As we kick off Women’s History Month, there is an extra energy in the air, an optimism propelled by intentional actions by pioneers just like you, who are making a difference in your communities.

In this issue we recognize three Cornerstone-area CEOs who collaborated with other CEOs across the U.S. to launch the Credit Union Women’s Leadership Alliance (CUWLA), a support system that focuses on the unique challenges facing smaller credit unions. Lily Newfarmer with Tarrant County’s Credit Union, Maria Martinez with Border Federal Credit Union, and Tammy Passafiume with Diamond Lakes Federal Credit Union joined 10 other female CEOs representing credit unions with asset sizes of $300 million or less to share best practices, offer opportunities for mentorship, and foster collaboration.

Our credit union members are rebuilding following the extreme weather that hit the Cornerstone region in mid-February. Winter storms across the southern United States caused millions to lose power, and many continue to deal with the aftermath. Read about what some of our credit unions are doing to recover from the damage.

We recently connected with Keith Morton, president of Asset Management and Assistance Center at the NCUA, who updated us on the status of the Southwest Capital Federal Credit Union distributions. Also, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) launched the first MAP campaign of 2021.

It’s never been easier for credit unions to make a difference in their communities. Through payroll deduction, credit union staff can donate as little as $2 per paycheck to help fund Cornerstone Foundation’s grant programs.

We’ll share some CUNA GAC highlights with you, as we look toward another major event coming up: IMPACT Virtual (previously known as Annual Meeting). We break down some conference details, including our credit union-focused educational forums, which cover topics of specific interest to you. This week, we’re spotlighting the Compliance and Audit forum.

Read about this and more in this week’s Leaguer. Wherever you are in your journey to stimulate progress, I hope this issue provides inspiration.
