Greater Texas FCU lives out the ICU Day theme of ‘inspiring hope’

Posted: Sep 23, 2020 | Author: Cornerstone League

Greater Texas Federal Credit Union exemplifies the International Credit Union Day theme of “Inspiring hope for a global community.” The credit union empowers members and non-members alike to look beyond the day to day and plan ahead for a brighter future. The credit union focuses on a combination of community engagement and products and services to give members control of their financial futures. Greater Texas FCU also invests in financial education and literacy to help individuals from all walks of life.

One way to inspire hope is by helping tomorrow’s leaders with tuition costs during this ongoing pandemic. Aggieland Credit Union, a branch of Greater Texas Federal Credit Union, recently kicked off its fourth Tuition Takedown Giveaway. To qualify, students must be enrolled full-time at Texas A&M University, have a checking account with Aggieland or Greater Texas Federal Credit Union, complete the contest registration form, and be signed up for e-statements.

In May, Reagan Browning, Texas A&M University class of 2023, was selected as a Tuition Takedown giveaway winner for the 2019-2020 school year. Browning, a history major, was presented with a check for $5,000. Browning was the third winner of the credit union’s Tuition Takedown giveaway. Browning and his family are longtime Aggieland Credit Union members, and Browning’s parents met when they both worked for the credit union years ago. So far, the credit union has awarded $15,000 in scholarships.

“Knowing and supporting the community you find yourself in and thinking on a global scale of how it impacts the world around you makes for a more balanced and impactful workplace,” said Community Relations Director Rachel Bond. “Greater Texas FCU is always looking ahead, while remembering the past, to ensure the legacy left behind is one of optimism and confidence in the credit union industry and the world around us.”

Greater Texas FCU impacts communities across Texas through a combination of financial support, community engagement, and employee volunteerism. In 2019, the credit union donated more than $256,000 to local nonprofits, community organizations, and schools in the 19-branch area the credit union serves. Through its Greater Good employee volunteerism program, employees used 1,261 hours of paid time to work with charities, and after-hours time was given by the staff to make a difference in their local communities. From food banks and park cleanups to mentoring students, each Greater Texas employee uses the time to support their own volunteering passions.

For 2020, one of the largest community efforts is the collaboration with other Austin-based credit unions in the Austin Habitat for Humanity House that Credit Unions Built, a first in the nation.
