It's August Recess! Are you reaching out to your elected officials?

Posted: Aug 6, 2019 | Author:

Congress is shuttered for the summer recess, and that means your senators and representatives are back in their home districts. If you haven't already, this is a great time to reach out and request meetings in their home offices or in your credit union. A meet-and-greet will give your credit union an opportunity to show elected officials your commitment to the members and communities you serve who are also their constituents.

Specific recess dates are:
US House:        July 29 – Sept. 6
US Senate:       Aug. 5 – Sept. 6

"The power of advocacy lies in taking meaningful action, so I strongly encourage credit unions to make it a priority to call and arrange a meeting with their lawmakers while they're home," said Cornerstone Chief Government Relations Officer Jim Phelps. "Face-to-face engagement is the best way to make an impression. That's when we can relate the most impactful stories about our members, counter the growing false narratives by bankers, and engender a deeper understanding of how credit unions support their communities in ways no other financial institutions can."

When you set up your meetings, be sure to prepare the latest Project Zip Code numbers to prove the influence and reach of credit unions among their constituents.

If you need help on how to arrange a meeting with your lawmaker, email Cornerstone Political and Grassroots Director April Krause at akrause@cornerstoneleague.coop or call 800-442-5762, ext. 6487.
