Trump nominates Todd Harper as new NCUA board member

Posted: Feb 4, 2019 | Author:

President Donald Trump on Friday nominated Todd Harper to serve as a National Credit Union Administration board member. Harper’s nomination would fill the third seat on the NCUA board, left vacant since former Chair Debbie Matz retired in April 2016. Harper's term would expire April 10, 2021.

Until 2017, Harper served as the director of public and congressional affairs and as the chief policy advisor to the chairman at the NCUA. Prior to serving at the NCUA, Harper served 14 years on Capitol Hill as a senior aide to Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski (D-PA).

“The CUNA/league system heartily congratulates Todd Harper on his nomination to the NCUA board, and credit unions look forward to working with a full, three-person NCUA board should this nomination go through,” said Jim Nussle, CUNA President/CEO. “He is a familiar face to not-for-profit financial cooperatives, which is a very positive development. CUNA looks forward to engaging further when possible to help NCUA continue its work providing examination and other regulatory relief to credit unions.”

"Cornerstone Credit Union League congratulates Todd Harper on his nomination to the NCUA board," said President/CEO Caroline Willard. "We're optimistic about his tenure, given his previous legislative and regulatory experience and his demonstrated ability as advisor to Chairman McWatters. We wish him all the success in maintaining the safety and soundness of credit unions."

NCUA Board Chairman J. Mark McWatters extended his congratulations as well. “With nearly 25 years of public service in the areas of financial services regulation and policy, Todd brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will serve him well as a member of the NCUA Board and as a regulator," McWatters said.

Trump nominated Rodney Hood, who previously served on the board under President George W. Bush, to fill the seat currently occupied by board member Rick Metsger, whose term expired in August 2017. Hood was also nominated in the last Congress but did not receive a confirmation hearing.

The five-year term of board chair J. Mark McWatters is scheduled to expire in August 2019.
