Financial Literacy Month might be over, but supporting credit union members by fostering their financial empowerment is a year-long endeavor.
With a member-focused approach and commitment to “people helping people,” credit union staff stand as pillars of financial education and support for their communities, creating a sense of trust and collaboration that empowers the members to make informed financial decisions that align with their goals and values.
How is your credit union implementing financial literacy strategies?
Beyond serving their membership, credit unions and their staffs can make an enormous impact in their communities by:
- Engaging in financial literacy initiatives, like partnerships with schools, nonprofit organizations, and businesses in the community.
- Providing a wide range of educational resources and programs for members of all ages, including youths.
- Ensuring certified financial counselors are on staff to provide more resources and guidance to members and communities.
- Training your staff of young professionals who can engage with younger members.
Latonia Thompson, director of branch operations for United Community Credit Union, shares how the FiCEP certification can better equip staff to assist members with financial concerns.
“Having the certification provides trust and value in the advice given regarding questions about finances,” she said. “It also allows us to stand behind a code of ethics, promoting integrity, transparency, and professionalism as we assist members with their financial needs.”
Registration for the Cornerstone FiCEP program runs through June 7. Capitalize on this opportunity to empower credit union staff and members.
