A Conversation with the New Texas Credit Union Commissioner Robert Etheridge

Commissioner Etheridge will provide an update on the status of the credit union system in Texas and an overview of the Texas Credit Union Department, including the department’s operational status, staffing, budget, financial performance, and upcoming priorities and goals.

Time will be provided at the end for a Q&A session. Credit unions are encouraged to submit questions or topics in advance when registering.

Presenter: Robert Etheridge, Texas Credit Union Commissioner 

Robert Etheridge began his career in the credit union industry in 1986 when he was hired by the Credit Union Department as a field examiner in the Dallas/Ft. Worth zone.

From there, he joined East Texas Professional Credit Union as an internal auditor. During his 13-year tenure, he held various positions and served in management capacity for 10 of those years. In 2003, Robert became Executive Vice-President at River City Federal Credit Union where he stayed for seven years.

In 2010, he rejoined the Credit Union Department, serving as a Financial Examiner and a Senior Field Specialist. He became Chief Examiner in 2014, and Deputy Commissioner in 2016, where he has had a variety of responsibilities related to Department operations and the regulation and supervision of Texas state-chartered credit unions.

He became Commissioner in December 2025, upon the retirement of the current Commissioner that same month.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with an emphasis in Petroleum Business Management and is a 1992 graduate of CUNA Management School.
