Celebrate Women’s Equality Day: Advocate for Credit Unions
Celebrate Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26, commemorating the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote.
Women’s Equality Day exists because of the actions of the brave women who fought for the right to vote and the advocates who supported them. Even though the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote nationally on Aug. 18, 1920, the amendment was not official until it was certified by U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby on August 26, 11 days later.
And despite having the necessary minimum votes to ratify the amendment, anti-suffrage legislators tried desperately to nullify the previous vote.
In 1971, Representative Bella Abzug championed a bill in the U.S. Congress to designate Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment, granting American women the right to vote. Though anti-suffrage movements are nothing to worry about these days, it’s important to remember the brave women who stood up for their right to vote and their advocates.
How can we honor the efforts of all who have advocated for issues that have influenced society as we know it today?
By continuing to exercise our rights to effect positive change.
