Connected Colleagues, Stronger Credit Unions
By Lauren McKay, Young Professional Advisor, UP Federal Credit Union
A few weeks ago, I had the honor of representing UP Federal Credit Union at this year’s Young Professional Conference as a Young Professional Advisor. As a first-time attendee, it was a truly wonderful experience. Not only did I collaborate with other credit union professionals, but I also heard from Texas legislative staffers on why relationships are vital to our community.
One standout session featured an advocacy panel moderated by April Mobley, the YPA advocacy liaison for Cornerstone League. While Mike Garcia, chief of staff for Tarrant County Commissioner Matt Krause, and Andrew Herrel, chief of staff for Sen. Mayes Middleton, discussed their career journeys, one word central to their message completely grabbed my attention: relationships.
Consider a scenario where a longtime friend and a brand-new colleague approach you for an emergency loan. You would naturally feel more inclined to assist your friend. This reveals a fundamental truth: relationships are the foundation of a successful career within our credit union community. Credit unions are built on member-focused relationships, the literal embodiment of the “people helping people” philosophy. We constantly strive to deepen these connections, allowing us to not only better serve our members, but also truly understand their unique needs.
When I asked Karyn Davis, president/CEO of UP Federal Credit Union, how relationships have shaped her credit union career, she emphasized, “The relationships I’ve built throughout my career have been invaluable to my growth as a professional,” she said. “Connections with industry leaders across other credit unions, vendors, and the advocacy space form a network I rely on for questions, idea exchange, and finding ways to lift each other and our movement. Equally important, my relationships with our members allow us to provide a better experience for them. I encourage everyone to invest in relationships that will challenge you, stretch you, and help you become the best version of yourself.”
Relationships mold us into who we are today, a truth perfectly reflected in the credit union community. Every person we encounter leaves an imprint on our character, teaching us lessons about empathy, resilience, and love. Through shared joys and navigated conflicts, our interactions shape our values and redefine our perspectives. From personalized financial coaching to local community outreach, positive connections drive everything credit unions stand for. Ultimately, these meaningful bonds empower individuals and create a ripple effect of shared financial prosperity.
