Sister Societies

Sister Societies are local Global Women Leadership Network chapters (part of the World Council of Credit Unions) established around the world to further the Network’s global mission of making a local impact. Chapter members do this by convening credit union leaders (men and women), discussing credit union issues, exchanging ideas, networking with neighboring credit union leaders, and sharing lessons learned. Sister Societies also provide an opportunity to talk through important issues impacting women leaders in credit unions.

The Sister Society initiative within the Cornerstone region is part of the League’s International Relationship Committee.

Central Texas Sister Society attendees

The Central Texas Sister Society held its quarterly meeting on March 20 at Slow Rise Slice House in Waco. The intimate crowd of 10 made attendees feel more comfortable sharing their professional and personal experiences.

Norma Garza from Cornerstone Resources spoke on growth and shared stories about those who influenced her life the most. The topic of growth was especially poignant during National Women’s History Month.

“It was an honor to share a bit of my background with my ‘sisters’ in my journey, particularly during National Women’s History Month,” said Garza.

“My dad’s guidance and encouragement toward education had a huge influence on my life,” Garza said. “Despite the challenges he faced as a young Chicano in South Texas, he was able to go to college and attain his degree with the help of a credit union—something I only learned about later in life. But his drive, tenacity, perseverance, and love of learning helped mold me into who I am today.”

Garza spoke of the importance of having mentors as well.

“My mother, a schoolteacher and real estate agent, was my mentor,” Garza said. “Her drive and love of helping her students and clients resonated with me. Then as I began my career in the financial services industry, the support and encouragement of one of my former bosses afforded me the opportunity to learn about many areas of the business, which allowed me to expand my knowledge, skills, and abilities.”

“Our Sister Society is in a growth season of its own, and Norma’s inspirational message encouraged us to always seek and seize opportunities,” said attendee Shelli McCoy, Sister Society member and chief retail officer for First Central Credit Union. “You never know where the simplest opportunity may take you or grow you.”
