Columbia Credit Union Turns Inspiration Into Back-to-School Relief

One Credit Union Difference story helped spark another act of community support in Columbia, Mo.

After seeing Cornerstone’s June article, “Credit Unions Help Ease the Cost of Getting Around,” which highlighted credit unions helping families with fuel costs, Columbia Credit Union found a way to bring the idea home.

On Aug. 13, Columbia CU partnered with Perry’s Full Service for its People Helping Parents event, distributing nearly 3,000 donated school supplies and providing a little relief at the pump to families in 140 cars.

The event grew from a community donation drive held throughout July. Families could choose the backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other supplies their children needed, helping reduce some of the expenses that come with a new school year. Luda’s Lemonade also supported the event by donating much of the lemonade served.

“Back to school can put a lot of pressure on a family’s budget, and we simply wanted to make things a little easier,” said Columbia Credit Union President Jennifer Heath. “What made the day so special was watching people show up for one another.”

Credit union employees collected and sorted donations, distributed supplies, assisted at the pumps, and helped coordinate the event, while other employees kept the credit union operating for members.

For Heath, the impact demonstrates how community support can begin with a simple idea and grow through cooperation.

“You don’t have to do something big to do something meaningful,” Heath said. “Small acts matter, and when enough people choose to help, the impact can be pretty incredible.”

Columbia CU’s effort also shows how sharing the credit union difference can multiply its impact—one credit union’s idea can inspire another to find its own way to help.
