Credit Unions Help Ease the Cost of Getting Around
As families continue to navigate rising household expenses, two Cornerstone-region credit unions are helping put a little extra money back into their communities’ pockets, one tank of gas at a time.
In Houston, Shell Federal Credit Union recently hosted a free gas giveaway, offering $25 in fuel to the first 100 vehicles in line as part of its continued commitment to supporting the communities it serves. Held June 24 at MOTU on Clear Lake City Boulevard, the event was open to the public, and credit union membership was not required to participate.
“At Shell FCU, we believe in making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve,” said Traci Gianukos, vice president of marketing at Shell FCU. “Whether it’s through financial education, community involvement, volunteerism, or events like this gas giveaway, we’re committed to supporting our neighbors and helping families stretch their budgets a little further.”
In Oklahoma, Tinker Federal Credit Union is taking a longer-term approach through its 2026 Win Gas for a Year Sweepstakes. The credit union will award free fuel for a year to 10 winners, with current members automatically entered and opportunities available for prospective members to participate as well.
While the two efforts differ in format, they reflect the same credit union value: responding in practical ways to the everyday challenges people are facing. Support is not always about large-scale programs or long-term initiatives. Sometimes it means helping families manage a cost that touches nearly every part of daily life.
Together, these initiatives show how credit unions continue to serve as community partners, finding timely and tangible ways to help members and neighbors alike.
