RBFCU and Security First CU Offer Relief and Reassurance During Government Shutdown

Thu October 09, 2025

As the federal government shutdown continues to strain household budgets, credit unions are once again proving their “people helping people” philosophy is more than words; it’s action.

At Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU), relief for affected members comes with both compassion and convenience. RBFCU is offering a Government Shutdown Consumer Relief Loan that requires no credit pull for eligible members, ensuring quick access to funds when they’re needed most. In addition, the credit union is waiving fees and early withdrawal penalties on certificates, giving members flexible access to their own money without added costs.

Farther south, Security First Credit Union is extending a personal and proactive hand to members in the Rio Grande Valley. Recognizing the uncertainty federal employees, contractors, and service providers face, Security First is offering payment deferrals on eligible loans and credit cards, waived late fees, and financial counseling to help members navigate this difficult time.

Security First President/CEO Andy Reed emphasized how the local economy adds urgency to the credit union’s relief efforts. “We currently have an average unemployment rate between the upper valley and lower valley of 7%. The national average is 4.3%, so while the shutdown will affect us, it will also amplify the current situation that is not great,” Reed said.

Both credit unions embody the cooperative difference that distinguishes the credit union movement. In times of economic uncertainty, they continue to meet members where they are: with understanding, flexibility, and a focus on long-term financial wellness.

From central Texas to the Valley and beyond, credit unions are reinforcing what their members have always known: when challenges arise, their credit union stands ready to help them through.
