GECU Supported Members and the Community During the Federal Government Shutdown
Thu December 04, 2025
During the federal government shutdown, GECU moved quickly to help members and families across Texas and New Mexico—demonstrating the credit union commitment to people helping people.
Member Relief at a Glance
- $2.2 million in emergency loans funded at 6% APR for federal workers, contractors, and others disrupted by the shutdown.
- Loan flexibility through extensions and reduced payments, giving members a 45-day buffer as pay resumed.
- Skip-a-payment support: Fees were waived, and eligible members with direct deposit received an automatic, no-fee skip. Qualified credit card holders will have no December payment.
Community Impact
- 200 bags of essential food items distributed with Mi Comunidad Center to support families experiencing food insecurity.
- $10,000 donated—in partnership with Mastercard—to United Way’s Center for Resiliency for emergency food baskets.
- $10,000 contributed to the Armed Services YMCA’s Junior Enlisted Family Center to support its food market, thrift store, and Operation Baby program.
Support for Furloughed Civilian Employees
At the Fort Bliss/William Beaumont Army Medical Center Resource Fair, GECU offered financial guidance and—together with Mastercard—distributed $12,500 in gift cards to help furloughed civilian employees manage urgent expenses.
GECU’s response highlights the strength of the cooperative model: showing up for members, supporting military families, and uplifting communities when they need it most.
