Cornerstone’s Modernization Strategy Focuses on Smarter Service for Credit Unions

Cornerstone League is making significant investments in technology designed to strengthen the personalized service credit unions have long valued.

In a recent episode of The Cornerstone League Podcast, Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer Jim Phelps shared how the organization’s modernization strategy centers on creating a more connected, proactive, and individualized member experience.

Rather than viewing modernization as simply a technology initiative, Phelps emphasized that the effort is focused on helping Cornerstone better understand and serve the unique needs of credit unions across its five-state region.

“The modernization is ultimately about how we create and deliver value to member credit unions,” Phelps said. “Our vision is to become more connected, more personalized, and more proactive in how we serve our members.”

The strategy includes several major initiatives, including implementation of Salesforce and Fonteva to better connect member information across the organization, Zest AI to provide more robust financial data and market insights, Capacity’s AI-powered knowledge platform to deliver faster answers for staff and members, and Lumen (formerly Talkwalker) to strengthen market awareness and identify emerging trends affecting credit unions.

Phelps noted that while artificial intelligence plays an important role in these efforts, people remain at the center of the strategy.

“AI amplifies human expertise; it doesn’t replace it,” he said. “Technology can process information quickly, but people provide the judgment, context, relationships, and experience that ultimately create value.”

As implementation continues, Cornerstone also plans to share lessons learned with member credit unions through future educational programming focused on AI adoption, digital transformation, and operational best practices.

The ultimate goal, Phelps said, is simple: that every interaction with Cornerstone provides timely, relevant insights that help credit unions better serve their members.
