YP Perspective: National Financial Awareness Day: Empowering Members Through Financial Education
By Joe Wilmot, YP advisor, staff trainer, CoastLife Credit Union
Every year on Aug. 14, National Financial Awareness Day reminds us that financial well-being is not achieved through one big decision. It is built through small, informed choices made consistently over time.
For credit union young professionals, the day is an opportunity to reinforce the “people helping people” philosophy by empowering members to make confident financial decisions.
Be a Trusted Financial Guide
Today’s members face challenges ranging from rising living costs and student loan debt to preparing for homeownership and retirement. Every interaction—whether opening an account, discussing a loan, or answering a question—is an opportunity to educate and build trust.
Consider asking members:
- What financial goal are you working toward this year?
- Are you saving for a major purchase or life event?
- Have you reviewed your budget recently?
- Are you using all the financial tools your credit union offers?
These conversations can uncover opportunities to provide guidance that meets members where they are.
Connect Members with Resources
Credit unions offer resources members may not realize are available, including budgeting and savings tools, financial education workshops, credit monitoring resources, first-time homebuyer information, and retirement education.
Young professionals can play an important role in connecting members with those resources. Sometimes, one conversation about automatic savings can help build an emergency fund, while a discussion about credit can put a member on the path toward a better borrowing opportunity.
Make Financial Awareness an Everyday Practice
Financial education is not limited to Aug. 14. As emerging credit union leaders, young professionals can continue strengthening their own knowledge while listening with empathy and helping members navigate financial decisions.
This National Financial Awareness Day, challenge yourself to have one meaningful financial wellness conversation with a member. Small conversations can create lasting impact and demonstrate the credit union difference.
