Credit Unions Turn Advocacy Conversation into Community Action
Credit union leaders met with U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez at Rally Credit Union in Corpus Christi this week, using the opportunity to discuss issues affecting members and identify a tangible way to address one of the most pressing ones: financial fraud. Gonzalez currently serves Texas’ 34th Congressional District.
Cornerstone League participated in the nearly 90-minute discussion alongside area credit union leaders and America’s Credit Unions.
Tackling Fraud Through Education
The conversation focused heavily on the growing prevalence and sophistication of fraud, particularly elder financial abuse. Participants discussed how artificial intelligence and increasingly convincing scams are making it more difficult for consumers to recognize fraudulent activity before money is lost.
Financial literacy and student loan debt were also among the issues discussed.
Rather than ending the conversation at the meeting table, local credit unions are planning to work collectively through the chapter and with Gonzalez’s office to host a financial literacy event for seniors and, ideally, a trusted family member or caregiver.
The congressional visit also received local media coverage from KIII 3 News in Corpus Christi, highlighting Gonzalez’s visit to the area and his conversations with local leaders. View the KIII 3 News coverage.
The event, targeted for early October during Financial Planning Month, would help attendees recognize emerging scams, understand how fraud tactics are evolving, and learn practical ways to protect themselves and their finances.
Advocacy With a Local Impact
The meeting demonstrates how direct engagement with policymakers can extend beyond legislative priorities. By combining credit unions’ firsthand understanding of member challenges with congressional outreach, the group is developing an educational response to a problem already affecting families throughout South Texas.
The October event also reinforces a central credit union strength: turning advocacy conversations into practical action that benefits the communities credit unions serve.
The Cornerstone League Podcast covers the issue of fraud in two of its recent episodes: Building a Fraud-Resilient Credit Union, featuring Annette Leeth of True Sky Federal Credit Union; and Fraud Trends and How Credit Unions Can ‘Fight the Fraud.
