Cornerstone Foundation Strengthens the Movement Through $412,740 Grants and Scholarships
The Cornerstone Foundation continues to advance the credit union movement in 2026 through strategic investments that empower credit unions, develop future leaders, and create meaningful community impact.
Through grants and scholarships, the Foundation provides resources that help credit unions expand programs, strengthen operations, and better serve their members and communities. The Foundation’s 2026 funding awarded to date reflects its continued commitment to three core initiatives: credit union development, financial wellness, and disaster relief.
Professional Development Grants — $275,157
The Foundation awarded grants to eight Cornerstone chapters and 89 credit unions to equip credit union professionals with the tools needed to drive innovation, expand access, and strengthen the movement. Additional professional development grants and scholarships supported young professionals, Credit Union Development Education (CUDE), the Principles and Philosophy Workshop (CCUC), the CU FinHealth Conference, and small credit union initiatives.
Community Development Grants — $56,000
Nine credit unions and two credit union chapters received Community Development Grants to support financial wellness and outreach programs designed to address the unique needs of their local communities. These flexible funds help credit unions create meaningful impact through initiatives such as financial education, community engagement, and programs that improve members’ financial well-being. With no application deadline and one grant available per credit union each calendar year, the program allows credit unions to respond to community needs year-round.
SCMS Scholarships — $68,833
The Foundation awarded 53 scholarships to students participating in all three years of the Southwest Credit Union Management School (SCMS), helping prepare the next generation of credit union leaders. These scholarships provide professionals with access to advanced education, leadership development, and the skills needed to continue strengthening the credit union movement.
Disaster Relief Grants — $12,750
Sixteen Phase I Disaster Relief Grants have been distributed to credit union staff and volunteers in the Cornerstone region impacted by unexpected disasters. These grants provide financial assistance during challenging times, helping employees and volunteers begin the recovery process. The Foundation remains committed to supporting those who dedicate their careers to serving others.
