Fraud Isn’t Always Digital: Protect Yourself From Scams
Mon December 22, 2025
When people think about fraud, they often picture suspicious emails or fake websites. While digital scams remain common, some of today’s most effective fraud schemes happen by phone—or even face-to-face—using pressure, authority, and urgency rather than technology.
Phone scams often involve callers posing as government agencies, utility companies, financial institutions, or even family members in distress. In-person scams may include unsolicited repair services, fake charity requests, or individuals offering “help” that quickly turns into a financial trap.
What these scams have in common is emotional manipulation. They rely on fear, confusion, or urgency to short-circuit rational decision-making. The goal is to push you to act before you have time to verify information.
A few simple rules can help protect you:
- Legitimate organizations do not demand immediate payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or payment apps.
- You always have the right to hang up, walk away, or say no—no explanation required.
- Verify independently. Call organizations using official phone numbers from trusted sources, not the contact information provided to you.
- Talk it through with someone you trust before taking action, especially if money is involved.
If something feels off, it probably is. Fraudsters rely on silence and embarrassment to succeed. Asking questions and slowing the process down is one of the strongest defenses you have.
Credit unions are a trusted resource in these situations. If you’re unsure about a request involving your finances, pause and seek guidance before responding. A second opinion can prevent a costly mistake.
