Young professionals across the Cornerstone region aren’t just finding opportunities through Cornerstone League’s Young Professionals (YP) program or chapter-level YP groups. Many credit unions are investing in their emerging leaders by creating internal YP programs—offering avenues for cross-department collaboration, mentorship, community involvement, and professional development.

At TTCU Federal Credit Union in Tulsa, Okla., Lending Analyst Jessica Cranke said their internal YP program has had a powerful impact on employee engagement. “When YPs feel valued and have access to development opportunities, they’re more likely to stay and contribute meaningfully,” she said. “It also helps cultivate future leaders and brings fresh energy to the organization.”

At BluCurrent Credit Union in Springfield, Mo., Stephanie Robb, director of lending services, shared that their internal YPs regularly volunteer, gather resources for local nonprofits, and support community events. While giving back is central to their mission, the group also participates in social outings that strengthen team building and connection.

At GECU in El Paso, Texas, Monica Galindo, assistant vice president of advocacy & external affairs, emphasized how internal programs can deepen understanding of the credit union difference. She highlighted a condensed Principles & Philosophy Workshop held in honor of International Credit Union Day, led by Cornerstone Foundation Executive Director Courtney Moran. The session covered cooperative principles, the 12 development issues, an overview of the credit union system, and a human-centered design activity. Galindo said the experience allowed both new and tenured young professionals to strengthen their connection to the movement’s “people helping people” philosophy.

At Tinker Federal Credit Union, Kelsey Kendall, lending services processing manager, noted that their internal YP program has opened doors for two-way communication between emerging leaders and senior executives. Activities such as “speed mentoring” create space for conversation, idea-sharing, and leadership visibility. She said the program has been mutually beneficial—providing valuable insight for YPs while giving senior leaders a deeper understanding of employee perspectives.

For credit unions looking to launch or enhance their own internal YP program, Cornerstone offers tools and peer connections to help get started.
