As October brings out the ghosts and ghouls, another kind of fright lurks in the shadows, financial scams. From phishing emails to romance schemes, cybercriminals continue to target communities. Luckily, young professionals in credit unions are stepping up as fraud fighters, using vigilance, creativity, and tech-savvy skills to keep members safe.

YPs Step Up

Stephanie Garces, Member Service Representative at South Texas Federal Credit Union, shared a powerful example of why this work matters:

“An elderly member came in to send a wire transfer to someone she had never met. The red flags didn’t add up, so I paused the transaction and explained what fraud can look like. She realized it was a scam and decided not to send the money. It was such a relief knowing she didn’t become a victim.”

Moments like this highlight the critical role young professionals play on the frontlines of fraud prevention. Their ability to ask questions, trust their instincts, and educate members can turn a potential financial nightmare into a story of protection.

Beyond the Basics

Young professionals are also finding new ways to connect sharing quick fraud tips on social media, hosting engaging cybersecurity sessions, and encouraging members to use tools like account alerts, card controls, and strong passwords.

This October, while many enjoy haunted houses and pumpkin patches, remember the real threats are the scams hiding in the shadows. With young professionals leading the charge, members can rest easier knowing someone is always watching out for them.
