Time and time again, we hear the term “personal brand” and are told how important it is to create one. Whether you’re just starting out or growing your career in the credit union industry, creating your personal brand will set you apart and aid you in achieving your career aspirations.

Understanding What a Brand Is

A personal brand is a direct representation of how others see you. This will encompass your strengths, values, expertise, and personality (both offline and online). One way to view it is as your signature: unique and totally yours.

Steps to Develop Your Brand

If you are reading this article, it is because you want to make the credit union industry a career, not just a job. You are a rising leader in your organizations, and this is the perfect time to start shaping the way those around you see you. The sooner you begin defining your brand, the more intentional and consistent your journey will be.

Here are four steps to help you develop your brand:

  1. Define Your Values and Strengths

Define your core values and how those reflect in your work-life. Why are you passionate about the credit union movement? What tasks/conversations do your coworkers come directly to you for?

  2. Prepare an Elevator Pitch

Develop your elevator pitch to describe who you are, what you do, who you serve or want to impact, and the unique value you bring. Be original and show your authenticity.

  3. Put Yourself Out There

Join groups that will help you grow, such as the Cornerstone YP community, update your LinkedIn profile often, and attend networking and volunteer events.

  4. Be Consistent
Do not compare your journey to the other young professionals around you. Be honest with yourself and stay true to your values. Everyone has a unique brand, and if you are starting off, remember that your brand will evolve with you.

Don’t be afraid to step up and build your brand. The first step is to define your purpose, show up every day with confidence, and find your voice. Remember that your brand can amplify your impact, not just for your professional development or growth, but to serve the community you are part of.
