Credit union employees under 40 aren’t just working in financial services—they’re actively shaping the future. These young professionals see credit unions as more than just financial institutions; they recognize them as community-driven forces for good.
From organizing financial literacy workshops to advocating for industry-wide improvements, these changemakers are making a lasting impact. They are:
- Breaking down traditional silos and fostering innovation
- Encouraging cross-sector collaboration to improve the financial ecosystem
- Bringing fresh perspectives that push the credit union system forward
Their passion and commitment revitalize the industry and ensure that credit unions remain relevant for future generations.
The Power of Collaboration
One of the greatest strengths of young professionals is their commitment to teamwork and collective success. They understand that meaningful progress happens when people come together.
Through local networking groups, regional initiatives, and national programs, they are building spaces to:
- Share ideas and best practices
- Support and mentor one another
- Amplify their collective impact across the credit union system
These networks empower young professionals with mentorship, leadership development, and advocacy opportunities—essential tools for shaping the future.
Dawn Johnson, marketing assistant at Fort Worth City Credit Union, emphasizes the impact of these programs. “Being able to be a part of CU Young Professionals is important to me because it establishes a safe environment for individuals wanting to expand in their career, community, and others by allowing access to resources and opportunities,” said Johnson.
Sophie Freeman, assistant vice president of training and development at Rave Financial, has the unique experience of fostering the growth of a YP community.
“Growing the Sabine Chapter of YPs was a personal goal of mine– once I became an advisor, I set out to have quarterly mixer-style events, and those garnered 120 attendees through 2024,” said Freeman. “I was so focused on growing the community that I didn’t realize the positive effect it was making. It’s been amazing learning from other YPs in my area and increasing my knowledge of the credit union industry. I am eager to gain insights from others this year and in the future by staying connected with our YP group.”
Get Involved
The future of the credit union movement depends on the voices and actions of its next generation of leaders. But building the future is a shared responsibility. One way to contribute is by joining the YP Community to join in on meetups and events. Join the discussion by registering as a CUYP.
