Young professional meetups have become a meaningful way for credit unions to strengthen engagement, develop emerging leaders, and reinforce the cooperative difference. Whether hosted internally or across multiple institutions, successful meetups create opportunities for connection, learning, and service, often with long-lasting impact.
Drawing from the YP Meetup Toolkit and insights from credit union leaders already doing the work, here are key elements of effective YP meetups.
Starting With Leadership Support and Initiative
Many successful YP programs begin with encouragement from leadership and a willingness to step forward. At Community Resource Credit Union in Baytown, Texas, leadership support played a critical role early on.
“Less than a month into onboarding with CRCU, our chief experience officer encouraged everyone under 40 to get involved with CUYP,” shared Jacob Wills, project manager II at CRCU. “I replied on a whim, shared my previous CUYP experience, and she was eager to hear more. The rest is history.”
This type of leadership openness, paired with YP initiative, sets the foundation for sustainable engagement.
Why YP Meetups Matter
YP meetups extend value beyond a single credit union. They introduce young professionals to broader perspectives, shared challenges, and opportunities for collaboration across the movement. This collaboration reflects the cooperative philosophy and reinforces the idea that credit unions grow stronger together.
Planning for Success: Shared Ownership
A common ingredient in effective meetups is shared responsibility. Rather than placing planning on one individual, effective programs rely on engaged teams.
“Many hands make light work,” Wills shared. “Having a steering committee of engaged YPs provides varied representation and takes pressure off one person.”
Jessica Cranke, quality control specialist at TTCU Federal Credit Union, highlighted a similar approach.
“Involving our entire YP leadership team in planning and executing events has made a big difference,” Cranke said. “When everyone feels involved, there’s more ownership and the events run more smoothly.”
Creating a Welcoming Experience
First impressions matter, especially for first-time attendees. Intentional icebreakers and structured activities help prevent common pitfalls, such as attendees interacting only with colleagues they already know. At TTCU, personally reaching out has proven to be especially welcoming.
“We personally reach out to YPs to invite them and make an intentional effort to welcome them as soon as they arrive,” Cranke shared. “That immediate connection helps them feel comfortable.”
Guided networking, discussion prompts, and seating arrangements can help foster comfort and connection from the start.
Measuring Impact Beyond Attendance
The true success of YP meetups often shows up after the event.
“Our YPs feel more connected and build friendships across departments,” Cranke shared. “That confidence makes it easier to collaborate, ask for support, and simply feel more engaged at work.”
Increased awareness, confidence, and participation across the credit union movement are also key indicators.
“It opened our YPs’ eyes to what’s available to them,” Wills said. “In the past year alone, we’ve had YPs selected as GAC Crashers, YP Advisors, and cuLEAD Deans. That exposure goes far beyond what we could provide internally.”
These outcomes highlight how meetups contribute to leadership development and long-term engagement.
Successful YP meetups do not require complex programming or large budgets. With leadership support, shared planning, inclusive design, and a focus on connection, credit unions can create meaningful spaces where young professionals thrive.
