Sessions & Speakers

Collections: Not Sure What Happened? Was a Good Loan When I Made It!

“Debts are like children: the smaller they are the more noise they make.” – Spanish Proverb

As Credit Union professionals, we hope our borrowers will repay us. However, loans can experience payment disruptions. When routine payment disruptions occur, we take off our lending cap and put on our collections combat helmet!

Collection efforts begin before we accept a loan application. Together, we will learn how to use the past, present, and future to establish sound credit union collection policies, procedures, and best practices.

The session will not be a broad overview of collection practices. We will roll up our sleeves and dive right into building a strong small credit union collection department (with policies, procedures, and do’s and don’ts) while keeping true to our core Credit Union philosophy.

Dr. Paul WitheyAbout Dr. Paul Withey

Dr. Paul Withey has worked in the credit union industry for 20 years as an employee, board member, and consultant. He has served as Cornerstone Credit Union League Region 1 – South East Texas Director since 2012, Texas Governmental Affairs Subcommittee since 2011, Chairman of Texas Governmental Affairs Subcommittee since 2017, Vice Chairman of Cornerstone Credit Union League Audit Committee since 2013, Houston Chapter of Credit Unions Board Member/Ex Officio (2004-2012), Houston Chapter of Credit Unions President, and much more credit union involvement. Dr. Withey enjoys a work-life balance by pursuing a passion for national and international travel, involved with his community, enjoys good food, and heartfelt humor.

Small Credit Union Compliance Updates

This session will include a small CU-focused look at recent and upcoming changes to various areas of compliance, including:

  • Handling Mandatory POAs
  • Beneficial Ownership Requirements for Opening Business Accounts under the BSA
  • Revocation of the Cole Memo, and impacts on BSA
  • ADA Website Compliance
  • CFPB’s Payday Lending Final Rule
  • Military Lending Act
  • Regulation CC
