Just one short week after the Credit Union National Association’s Governmental Affairs Conference (CUNA GAC), the Alamo Chapter of Credit Unions (ACCU) was once again back on The Hill spreading the credit union message as part of the SA to DC delegation.
Celebrating its 35th year, SA to DC is an annual conference hosted by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Free Trade Alliance. The 2013 conference was the largest ever, featuring 118 business and community leaders from the San Antonio Area.
The Alamo Chapter of Credit Unions served as speaker sponsors for Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Henry Cuellar. Ashley Harris, ACCU board president, attended the conference and served as the introduction speaker for both the Senator and the Congressman.
Senator Cruz spoke about the importance of fiscal responsibility and the ongoing sequestration, and Congressman Cuellar spoke on immigration reform. Local community leaders who attended the conference included City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor (Dist. 2), City Councilwoman Leticia Ozuna (Dist. 3) and City Councilman Rey Saldana (Dist. 4).
Other speakers at the conference included:
Congressman Lamar Smith
Congressman Lloyd Doggett
Congressman Pete Gallego
Senator John Cornyn
Senator Mary Landrieu (Louisiana)
Corin Stone, assistant director of National Intelligence Policy and Strategy, Office of the Director of National Intelligence

The conference’s signature events included a moderated discussion hosted by National Journal Editorial Director Ron Fournier, and featuring San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro. Another highlight was the Chairman’s Dinner, featuring the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Michael Oren.
In addition to the above speakers, the Small Business Issues Committee met with Marie C. Johns, deputy administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration and with staffers from the House Committee on Small Business. Another “highlight” of the conference included a first-hand view of “Snowquestration 2013,” which featured an entire shut down of the region, including the federal government, due to a tremendous snow storm.
