Nearly 100 students from Alief Hastings 9th Grade Center High School made their way to attend a REAL Solutions Financial Reality Fair sponsored by People’s Trust FCU and the People’s Trust Foundation.
The CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair is designed to provide students with a snapshot into the real world of financial reality. It was developed by the Financial Literacy Education Committee of America’s Credit Union Museum, in conjunction with the New Hampshire Credit Union League. The financial education fair is being made available to Texas REAL Solutions credit unions at no charge because of support received from the Texas Credit Union League, Texas Credit Union Foundation, the Friends of Consumer Freedom and the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF).
Featuring simulated spending situations that occur regularly in everyday life (such as purchasing a car, paying for groceries or renting an apartment); the event is designed to teach teens the basics and importance of budgeting.
Statistics indicate that the need to better equip students with these kinds of financial lessons at a young age is substantial. One in four college students have credit card debt of over $3,000, an amount that would take an estimated 14 years to pay off, if minimum monthly payments were made.
Credit union employees and local business volunteers were on hand to man the various fair booths, including Food, Cell Phones, Savings, Transportation, Entertainment and more. All booths are designed to tempt students into living beyond their means while having to make tough spending choices. Businesses represented included Best Buy, HEB Grocery, Liberty Mutual, Family Services of Greater Houston, Member Home Loan, and the Federal Reserve Bank Houston Branch.
“These young people will soon be out there making these real life decisions and they need to be prepared. This event brings together educators, community businesses, and volunteers who share a strong commitment to teaching financial lessons to young people in a way that is both engaging and realistic,” said Linda Birt, People’s Trust corporate outreach director.
