Find out what's new with credit unions in the region.

Yesterday, evolve FCU and the Make-A-Wish Foundation hosted a Wine and Wishes 2013: A Three Wish Circus, an annual fundraising event aimed at raising money to grant wishes for the children in the El Paso area battling life-threatening illnesses. The fundraiser was held at the El Paso Country Club, and attendees enjoyed wine, food, and live music, as well as participated in a live and silent auction. This year, evolve FCU is once again showing its support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by donating $50,000 to the organization.


South Texas FCU has a new CEO.  Fred Castillo, formerly COO for Security First FCU, assumed the role of CEO at South Texas FCU July 29. Castillo was with Security First FCU for 12 years. He is also a former member of the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s International Relationship Committee. Castillo reportedly has an active plan in place to increase loans and capital at this McAllen-based credit union.


Brent LloydTexell CU has announced the hiring of Brent Loyd to the position of director of retail delivery. In his new role, Loyd will oversee the administration and the efficient operations of all branches. He will also be responsible ensuring consistently excellent member service in all retail delivery channels.

“As director of retail delivery, Brent will add significant value to Texell with his background in management and member service and his extensive knowledge of the credit union industry,” said Texell COO Amy Merriman.

Loyd brings over 18 years of management experience, most recently working for PrimeWay FCU as the vice president of operations. 

“I am very excited to join the Texell team.  Texell is a very well-run, vibrant and progressive credit union," Loyd said.  "The management and staff are top notch and I am looking forward to contributing to Texell’s continued success.”


Shamzy RomeroSecurity Service FCU (SSFCU) is pleased to announce the promotion of Shamzy Romero to senior branch manager of its Highland Hills location.  In her new position, Romero will be responsible for member service, business development and providing team leadership to ensure an optimal experience for members.  

Romero is a 2009 graduate of the City South Leadership Academy and a 2013 graduate of Leadership Northeast. She joined SSFCU in 2003 as a part-time teller and has several years of experience in the financial services industry.  Most recently, Romero served as a business development officer, where she actively participated in financial education programs and community events.

Additionally, Romero formerly served as a member of the board for the Bexar County Chapter of D.A.R.E. and Business Careers High School. She actively volunteers in various organizations such as The Children’s Shelter, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Seton Home and Girls Incorporated of San Antonio.


Debra GuiterrezSSFCU has also promoted Debra Gutierrez to area manager of its west district.  In her new position, Gutierrez will be responsible for overall operations, member service and meeting strategic goals for the branches. 

Gutierrez is a 2008 graduate of the South Chamber Leadership Academy and participated in the Credit Union Executive Society University for several years.  She joined SSFCU in 1992 as a part-time teller and has since held multiple positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as senior branch manager.

In addition to her work experience, Gutierrez is an active member of Toastmasters International.
