It’s the start of the new school year and Galveston-based Coastal Community FCU is making sure students are prepared for the first day of school. On Saturday, the credit union held its annual “back2school bash.” Hundreds of children and their families showed up for the event, and the credit union gave out 500 backpacks filled with school supplies.
Coastal Community FCU President and CEO Carol Gaylord said the credit union started the “back2school” bash in 2006.
“In our first year, we really didn’t’ know what to expect, so we prepared just 100 backpacks, and those were gone pretty quickly. Last year we gave out 400 backpacks filled with school supplies. Each year the demand for backpacks grows.”
In addition to backpacks, families can take advantage of free immunizations for their kids at this annual event. The credit union also brings in a video game truck,
an obstacle course, moon walk and other activities. Hotdogs, snow cones and popcorn are served throughout the day.
“It was really a fun time for everyone,” adds Gaylord. “We had well over 1,000 people in attendance.”
For Gaylord and her staff, this event is a highlight of the year.
“Being able to give back to the community and touch people’s lives is such a rewarding experience,” she says. “It just feels wonderful to make a difference and give families a hand up when they need it the most.”
According to Gaylord, this event attracted volunteers from the Galveston Housing authority, the League, Classic Auto Group, Teen Health Click and the Galveston County Sherriff’s Department. A number of vendors set up booths at the event, including the Galveston Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, Galveston County Health District, and more.
