Go Bold! Vying for Awards Can Help Position You for the Future
Wednesday, January 31, 2018 7:00 AM

Cornerstone Credit Union League is now accepting nominations for some of the most prestigious awards the league offers, and while there are many accomplished credit union professionals in the region worthy of recognition, many hesitate to nominate someone, including themselves. But here's why you should go bold and do it.

Recognition aside, merely applying for awards or seeking to be nominated brings myriad career benefits. Putting together an award application encourages the nominees to engage in personal and professional self-assessment, which involves thinking about how you’re developing as an individual and how you’re developing skills and experiences that can be applied in different ways.

Competing for awards also creates an opportunity to receive useful feedback from those who nominated you about your work and how you're perceived. And seeking out senior colleagues who will cheer for you will help you build a strong support base for the future.

Just participating in the process may push you to become more competitive by filling gaps in your CV and increasing your visibility. Study the award criteria and looking at past winners may help you get a sense of what you want to strive for and identify skill gaps. Filling these gaps will not only increase your chances of getting an award, but also put you in a stronger position for your future career planning and progression.

Submitting an application for an award requires a certain degree of boldness, and those who are naturally shy or lack self-confidence shouldn’t let that get in the way of promoting themselves. To make it easier, build confidence by asking for constructive and honest feedback from mentors, allies, or leaders within and without your organization who might know whether your work is worthy of an award and how well your application comes across.

Should you emerge from the process with an award in hand, all the better. But even if you don’t win, don't take a loss personally. Instead, look for ways you could improve your application submission and/or your level of accomplishments and focus on those.
