Credit Unions Participate in DOJ Roundtable on ADA
Wednesday, December 5, 2018 6:45 AM

CUNA staff, state credit union leagues, and individual credit unions participated in a Department of Justice (DOJ) roundtable in Washington, D.C., on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The session was hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy.

The roundtable featured representatives from DOJ’s Disability Rights Section who provided a high-level introduction on three ADA hot topics: physical accessibility, website accessibility, and service animals. The session closed with an opportunity for participants to share experiences and provide general feedback directly to the DOJ. CUNA raised the need for the DOJ to provide clarity through guidance or a rulemaking on ADA website accessibility standards.

Last month, CUNA attended Fourth Circuit of Appeals arguments in a case involving Department of Labor (DOL) FCU related to a frivolous lawsuit alleging website noncompliance with ADA.  CUNA had previously filed an amicus brief in support of the credit union.

Credit unions in more than 30 states have been impacted by frivolous lawsuits alleging ADA noncompliance. In addition to providing support to credit unions fighting suits, CUNA has actively engaged Congress, state attorneys generals, and the DOJ to push for a solution to the problem of meritless litigation.
