Six Top Reasons to connect with your lawmakers during August recess

Posted: Aug 14, 2019 | Author:

As you've no doubt heard, Congress is on summer recess, and that means your elected officials are back in their home districts. If you haven't already, it's not too late to reach out and request meetings in your lawmaker's home office or at your credit union. Specific recess dates are:

U.S. House:     July 29 – Sept. 6
U.S. Senate:    Aug. 5 – Sept. 6

Are you ready for the Six Top Reasons to connect with your lawmakers during August recess? Here they are:

  1. A meet-and-greet will give your credit union an opportunity to show elected officials your commitment to the financial literacy of your members and the communities you serve.
  2. Impress your lawmaker by showing off your latest Project Zip Code numbers to prove the broad influence and reach of your credit union among their constituents.
  3. Tell the great stories about how your members benefit from belonging to your credit union in ways that help their families grow and prosper.
  4. Talk about your priority operational and service issues with a lawmaker who might not understand how the overburdensome rules and regulations hinder your business and adversely affect your members.
  5. Counter the growing false narratives bankers make about credit unions every day.
  6. This is Opportunity One to establish a relationship with your lawmaker. You never know, you could be the next credit union expert your lawmaker calls upon to learn more about the industry.

"Face-to-face engagement is the best way to make an impression on your elected officials," said Cornerstone Chief Government Relations Officer Jim Phelps. "This connection is how we engender a deeper understanding of credit unions, shed a bright light on regulatory burdens, and counter the bankers' false narratives and outright attacks. There's no better time to engage than while your lawmakers are in their home districts."
