May 2019 Chapter Report

It's Almost Time for Recess!

Not the playground recess of your childhood (sorry), but still a recess where lots of important meet-ups take place. Since many lawmakers return to their home districts during the "August" recess, their proximity presents an excellent opportunity for credit unions to do some localized engagement.
Specific recess dates and prime time for meet-ups are as follows:
US House: July 29 – Sept. 6
US Senate: Aug. 5 – Sept. 6

Your elected officials want to engage with you, so we encourage your chapter to invite them to speak at your August chapter meeting. Another great option is for your chapter to host a town hall or similar event where you invite not only your chapter members, but also the lawmakers' credit union member constituents. Chapter members can also visit with lawmakers in their district offices.
If the above ideas aren't options for your chapter, get creative! Any event that allows you opportunities to mingle with lawmakers and have important conversations is a great way to heighten the awareness of credit unions, so they will remember us when they return to work in DC.
Keep in mind, whatever event you choose will require planning, organizing, coordination, and time—and because the recess will be upon us soon, now is the time to start preparing. If you need help, let us know. Contact April Krause at

SAVE THE DATE: Hike the Hill in September

Hike the Hill | Sept. 18–20, 2019 | Washington, DC.
Hike the HillThis year, Cornerstone Credit Union League's signature advocacy event, Hike the Hill, takes place Sept. 18–20, right after lawmakers in Washington, DC, return from their summer recess. Round up your army of advocates and join us as we connect with lawmakers and regulators on critical credit union issues.
Our 2019 Hike the Hill is more important than ever. With 12 new members of Congress representing the Cornerstone region, new board members Rodney Hood and Todd Harper at the NCUA, and new CFPB Director Kathy Kraninger, there's no better time to be in DC spreading the message about the credit union difference.
Given the bankers' continued and increasing attacks, credit unions have important issues to discuss that include not only protecting our credit union tax exemption, but also strengthening data breach standards and mitigating regulatory burdens, to name a few.
"We should never under estimate the impact that attending Hike the Hill can make on lawmakers and regulators," said Cornerstone Government Relations Executive Director Gretchen Ziegler. "Hike the Hill is a great opportunity to teach those who make the laws and issue the regulations about our core principles and philosophy and relate the stories of our credit unions and how we serve our members and communities in ways no other financial institutions can."
Watch for more details at our website, as this year's agenda, hotel block information, and registration are finalized. We can't wait to see you in DC!
