Central Texas CU Community Does Not Appear to Have Been Impacted by Explosion
Friday, April 19, 2013 7:00 AM

While the explosion at a fertilizing plant has caused massive damage in the small town of West, it seems the credit union community in Central Texas has not been impacted. Texas Credit Union Foundation (TCUF) Executive Director Courtney Moran says she personally called every credit union in the Central Texas Chapter to assess what damage – if any – the credit unions or their employees have endured. She was able to get in touch with all but a few, and thankfully, our credit unions and their employees do not seem to have been impacted.

“Certainly this is good news for our credit union community in Central Texas; however, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all those who have suffered loss,” says Moran.

Given that it does not appear that the credit union community has been impacted, Moran says TCUF will not activate the disaster relief fund at this time. Moran encourages credit unions that want to help to consider making a donation to agencies such as the Red Cross, as well as donate blood.

Of course if it is discovered that a credit union employee has been impacted by the explosion, Moran assures TCUF is poised to help.

The Texas Credit Union League (TCUL) is holding a jeans day today to raise funds for victims of the explosions in Boston and West. Proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

TCUL has also learned that Texas Partners FCU is accepting donations to assist the community of West. Along with cash donations, the credit union is accepting non-perishable food contributions and is selling World’s Finest Chocolate to benefit the relief efforts. Donations will be accepted at all branch locations. Donations can also be mailed to: West, TX Relief Fund, 1011 Wales Drive, Killeen, Texas 76549. Questions may be directed to Shelley Carlson at (254) 526-3081.

All Genco FCU branches are also accepting donations in the name of the Red Cross for West residents.

Generations FCU says they are partnering with KENS 5 for their KENS Cares program.  The credit union will be accepting donations through their website www.mygenfcu.org/kenscares with all proceeds being donated to the Red Cross for their efforts in and around West.
