ADA Website Accessibility Tops Cornerstone's Compliance Agenda
Wednesday, January 24, 2018 7:55 AM

The ADA Website Accessibility Compliance issue has vaulted to the top of Cornerstone's agenda due to letters credit unions have received regarding lawsuits for alleged Americans with Disability Act violations. Cornerstone continues to monitor the situation and is considering how the league might engage in litigation, legislation, or other countermeasures to stem the tide of these frivolous lawsuits. In the meantime, credit unions must step up their efforts to protect themselves.

"This ADA accessibility issue is of utmost concern to us," said Cornerstone Credit Union League President/CEO Caroline Willard. "Our leadership and experts in the compliance arena have been steadfastly monitoring the situation. In the absence of clear standards, we intend to be aggressive in our search for ADA compliance solutions, and in the meantime, we encourage all credit unions to ensure their websites are in compliance with ADA Web Content Accessibility Guidelines."

During fall 2017, SVP Regulatory Compliance Counsel Suzanne Yashewski presented this subject as a cautionary compliance concern during compliance training she delivered to credit unions at Cornerstone’s roadshows. The concern was brought about through Cornerstone’s monitoring activity in certain parts of the country that has now spread nationwide. Cornerstone is working with system partners, including CUNA, to help credit unions be prepared to respond to these attacks.

This afternoon, Cornerstone will host its second webinar on ADA Website Compliance as a result of the increased lawsuits directed at credit unions. This webinar follows a sold-out webinar last week on the same issue, and will again be hosted and presented by Suzanne Yashewski. A recording of this webinar will also be archived for credit union use. Learn more or register here

Cornerstone launched its ADA Compliance Resource Center earlier this month to serve as a central repository for questions related to the ADA Website Compliance. You can review an FAQ, discover online resources to learn more about website accessibility or to perform an analysis of your public-facing websites, and find appropriate contacts at Cornerstone, Credit Union Resources, or the Cornerstone Foundation for assistance.

If you have any questions about this or other regulatory and compliance issues, and you want to speak with one of Cornerstone’s compliance experts, please call or email Information Central. Call 512-853-8515 or 800-442-5762, ext. 8515, or email

Finally, Credit Union Resources, a division of Cornerstone, has an ADA website compliance assessment product to help you verify and remedy areas of your website that need to be changed in order to become ADA compliant. If you would like more details about the ADA website assessment, you can contact Steve Gibbs at or call 469-385-6637.
