Every month, the Cornerstone League YP Newsletter spotlights a young professional who has gone above and beyond to impact the credit union industry. GECU Consumer Lending Learning and Development Officer Nick Castañeda has spent his entire career in the credit union industry and truly embraces the credit union philosophy, “people helping people.” Read about his commitment to the industry, his favorite TV show, and more in this month’s YP spotlight.

Why do you love working for a credit union?
Castañeda: I have been a GECU member since I was 12 years old and started working for credit unions at the age of 19. Credit unions have always been an integral part of my life both personally and professionally. They helped me achieve important financial milestones. My first savings and checking accounts were with a credit union. They counseled and guided me on the importance of building credit which lead to purchasing my home. Credit unions pride themselves in helping their communities while building life-long relationships that are passed down through generations. I embrace the “people helping people” philosophy and am proud to be a member and employee of my credit union.

What is one thing you are excited to do as a young professional representing your credit union?
Castañeda: I’m excited to help raise awareness and engagement as a Young Professional. It’s vital for the credit union movement. I consider myself lucky to be part of GECU’s Young Professionals and the Advisor committee. I have the opportunity to lead by example but also be an influence for our young professionals.

What do you think is the biggest concern for credit unions?
Castañeda: With technology and the pandemic making the world a smaller place, it’s important for credit unions to continue reaching out to the community. I think the biggest concern for credit unions is having a larger footprint. Credit unions must adapt to the evolving technology without losing their attention to the personalized member service that they have been known for.

What is your current binge-watching obsession?
Castañeda: My current binge-watching obsession is a show called “Designated Survivor.” I started watching this show out of curiosity and now I’m hooked. I am not too big into politics but this show is full of great storylines, current crisis issues, and it’s somewhat informative for those who wonder how the government runs. Although fictional, “Designated Survivor” is thrilling and entertaining and keeps me on my toes.
