Advocacy in Action: From Local Engagement to Federal Leadership

Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union recently hosted congressional candidate Jon Bonck, who is running in Texas’ 38th Congressional District, at its Houston headquarters. Representatives from Cy-Fair FCU, Shell Federal Credit Union, and First Service Credit Union discussed the important role credit unions play in serving their members and communities.

Texas credit unions continue to engage directly with lawmakers across the state, including a recent meeting between Rally Credit Union and U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez focused on financial fraud and other issues affecting credit union members. In another example, conversations during Cornerstone’s Hike the Hill led to a meeting with financial institutions across Texas’ 1st Congressional District to discuss financial fraud and the Financial Crimes Intelligence Center. Together, these efforts demonstrate how continued engagement with policymakers strengthens the credit union voice in Texas.

Across Our Chapters

Local chapters are also creating opportunities for credit union professionals to connect and strengthen relationships across the movement. The Dallas Chapter of Credit Unions recently brought together young professionals and other credit union professionals for an evening of networking, games, and friendly competition in Dallas. Neighborhood Credit Union had the largest group in attendance, with its young professionals connecting with peers from across the area.

Advocacy efforts are also continuing in Kansas and Missouri, with a regional advocacy workshop in Topeka and a St. Louis Chapter legislative reception bringing credit union professionals together to strengthen relationships and elevate the credit union voice.

On the Federal Front

John Crews was sworn in Aug. 24 as the 14th chairman of the National Credit Union Administration following his confirmation to the NCUA Board earlier this month. Crews has emphasized regulatory efficiency, responsible innovation, and maintaining the safety and soundness of the credit union system among his priorities.

“Chairman Crews brings extensive financial policy experience to the NCUA at an important time for the credit union movement,” says Suzanne Yashewski, regulatory and compliance counsel at Cornerstone League. “We look forward to working with him and the agency to support a regulatory environment that protects credit union members while allowing credit unions to innovate, grow, and continue serving their communities.”

Cornerstone will continue engaging with NCUA leadership to advocate for policies that support credit unions and the members and communities they serve.
