Community Vote Directs $32,000 to Lubbock Nonprofits
GECU and the GECU Foundation placed community members at the center of their giving through the inaugural Community Vote for Impact, allowing Lubbock residents to help determine where charitable funding could make the greatest difference.
Letting the Community Lead
Held in conjunction with the Lubbock 4th on Broadway Celebration, the initiative invited residents to vote for their preferred local nonprofit. Guadalupe-Parkway Neighborhood Center and Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest received the most support, earning $10,000 donations from GECU and the GECU Foundation, respectively.
“Hearing from those in the heart of the community and responding to their needs is exactly what the Community Vote for Impact is meant to do,” said GECU Foundation Executive Director Emmeline Garcia. “The inaugural vote received strong community participation, and we are excited to see the impact these funds will have moving forward.”
Extending the Impact
The six remaining participating organizations each received $2,000:
In total, the initiative directed $32,000 to organizations addressing housing instability, hunger, military and veteran support, family needs, and other community priorities.
By asking residents where support was most needed, GECU gained firsthand insight into the organizations Lubbock trusts to strengthen the community.
The initiative reflects a simple but meaningful approach to cooperative giving: listen to the people closest to local challenges, then provide trusted organizations with the resources to expand their work.
