Texas Governor Appoints Longtime Cornerstone Associate to Texas Secretary of State
Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Robert S. Howden as the 116th Texas Secretary of State, effective July 18. Howden succeeds Jane Nelson and will serve as the state’s chief election officer, overseeing the administration of Texas elections. His responsibilities also include managing official business filings, commissioning notaries public, maintaining the state seal, serving as the governor’s liaison for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs, and acting as the state’s chief international protocol officer.
We at Cornerstone are particularly pleased about Howden’s appointment as our collaborative connection goes way back.
“The appointment is especially meaningful for Cornerstone, as Howden served as the League’s contract lobbyist for more than 20 years,” said Mark Seale, Cornerstone League SVP, Advocacy. “Throughout that time, he has worked closely with the League on legislative and regulatory issues affecting Texas credit unions. We are very happy for Robert and look forward to working with him in this new role.”
Howden brings decades of experience in Texas government and public affairs to the position. Most recently, he served as senior advisor and director of legislative affairs in the Office of the Governor. Earlier in his career, he served as communications director and senior advisor to Gov. Rick Perry, led the National Federation of Independent Business Texas, and held positions in the administration of Gov. Bill Clements and at the Texas Department of Commerce. Before returning to state government, Howden spent several years as an independent legislative and public affairs consultant.
In announcing the appointment, Abbott highlighted Howden’s extensive public service and legislative experience, noting that he is well prepared to oversee Texas elections and represent the state in domestic and international affairs.
Howden’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Texas Senate.
