Credit Union of America Doubles Its Impact for Wichita’s Unhoused Community
Credit Union of America is turning one investment into $100,000 in support for Wichita residents experiencing homelessness.
The credit union donated $50,000 to Second Light, a 130-bed shelter and resource hub designed to connect individuals with coordinated services as they work toward stability and permanent housing. Through United Way of the Plains’ challenge grant, the contribution will be matched dollar for dollar.
Helping Build a Coordinated Response
Second Light’s one-stop model brings shelter, service providers, and other resources together in one location. Credit Union of America’s contribution will help the organization expand operations, strengthen services, and connect more people with the assistance they need.
“Addressing homelessness requires organizations across our community to work together,” said Credit Union of America President/CEO Frank Shoffner. “When United Way announced the match, CUA had no hesitation. We said yes because Second Light is essential to the Wichita community.”
Inspiring Broader Community Action
United Way has committed up to $1 million over three years to match community donations, creating the potential for $2 million in total funding for Second Light. Credit Union of America’s early participation has also encouraged additional businesses to support the campaign.
The investment demonstrates how credit unions can use their resources and community relationships to address complex local challenges. By doubling its contribution through the matching opportunity, Credit Union of America is helping provide immediate support while advancing Wichita’s longer-term goal of making homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring.
“Credit unions have always understood that lasting change happens through cooperation,” said Caroline Willard, president/CEO of Cornerstone League. “Whether supporting financial education, disaster relief, children’s hospitals, or housing initiatives, credit unions invest in the long-term well-being of the communities they serve.”
