Tools to Help Celebrate National Homeownership Month

Thu May 28, 2026

June is National Homeownership Month, a timely reminder of the role credit unions play in helping members reach and sustain one of life’s biggest milestones.

As affordability pressures continue to shape the housing market, credit unions remain uniquely positioned to offer something many members need just as much as a loan: practical guidance from a trusted financial partner. From competitive rates to personalized support, credit unions help make the path to homeownership feel more understandable and achievable.

To help credit unions communicate that value, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues and the League System have released a complimentary, fully customizable Affordability Toolkit. The resource includes ready-to-use member content, social media graphics, website copy, press release templates, and budgeting materials designed to help credit unions connect their products and services to real financial outcomes. The toolkit can support member education around budgeting, saving for a down payment, managing debt, and navigating today’s housing market.

At the same time, America’s Credit Unions is continuing to press for federal policy changes aimed at expanding access and reducing outdated barriers. In May, the organization urged House leadership to support credit union regulatory relief provisions included in the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act (H.R. 6644), and to add further relief, including measures tied to board modernization, mentorship opportunities for smaller institutions, and improved pathways for de novo credit unions.

The House later advanced the bill, returning it to the Senate after overwhelming support. Of particular note for credit unions, the measure includes regulatory relief language and provisions intended to preserve parity. America’s Credit Unions said its advocacy most notably addressed the board modernization provision, while also encouraging lawmakers to avoid contentious provisions as the legislation moves forward.

According to America’s Credit Unions, senators have already signaled concerns with the House version, and discussion is underway about potentially folding the measure into a broader banking package in the months ahead.

Taken together, the toolkit and the policy effort reflect a two-part approach: equipping credit unions to support members now, while also working to create a more workable regulatory environment for the future. For credit unions recognizing National Homeownership Month, that is a strong reminder that helping members afford a home often relies on both practical education and smart advocacy.
