NCUA, Treasury, IRS, and FinCEN Seek Industry Input
Federal agencies continue advancing a wide range of regulatory proposals and requests for information that could carry significant implications for credit unions, compliance operations, and the broader financial services landscape.
Recent comment opportunities from the Treasury Department, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) address issues ranging from stablecoin regulation and anti-money laundering requirements to field of membership rules, merger procedures, remittance transfer taxes, and efforts to streamline NCUA data collection requirements.
Several of the proposals focus on emerging financial technologies and digital asset oversight, including implementation of provisions tied to the GENIUS Act and proposed anti-money laundering and sanctions requirements for payment stablecoin issuers. Other proposals center on operational and governance matters directly affecting credit unions, including changes to associational common bond requirements, merger procedures involving bank conversions, and opportunities to reduce regulatory reporting burden.
These proposals could carry meaningful operational, compliance, strategic, and competitive implications for credit unions of all sizes. Industry engagement throughout the regulatory process remains critical to helping policymakers understand the real-world impact proposed changes may have on institutions and the members they serve.
Cornerstone League will continue monitoring these developments, advocating on behalf of credit unions, and supporting efforts to maintain a regulatory environment that promotes innovation, flexibility, consumer protection, and the continued strength of the credit union movement.
