Advocacy is a powerful tool, and as Texas Credit Union Association Grassroots & PAC Director April Mobley shared during the recent Young Professionals Virtual Meetup, it's only effective when it has proper support—what she refers to as the "three-legged stool." The foundation of successful advocacy lies in collective action and backing from all levels of the credit union movement.

Why Advocacy Matters

“Advocacy isn’t red or blue; we are purple,” said Mobley. “We support both sides.” This approach strengthens the movement and ensures that credit unions can:

  • Amplify their collective voice
  • Protect members from harmful legislation
  • Support policy that promotes financial well-being

Legislative Session Recaps

The event also featured legislative session recaps from the executive directors across the region, giving attendees insights into what’s happening at the state level:

  • Cara Tharp, executive director, Arkansas Credit Union Association – Highlighted that Arkansas enters into session every two years, making it important to stay engaged during active years.
  • Emily Beam, contract executive director, Kansas Credit Union League Association – Shared that the 2025 session wrapped up earlier than usual, and with 30% of legislators being new, relationship-building is a critical focus this year.
  • Ray Bozarth, executive director, Missouri Credit Union Association – Provided an overview of Missouri's session, giving updates on key legislative priorities for the credit union industry.
  • Thomas Lewis II, executive director, Oklahoma Credit Union Association – Presented the 2025 Oklahoma Session. He noted that participation is key due to the contestant-like rotation in representation each year.
  • Jessica Karlsruher, executive director, Texas Credit Union Association – Covered state updates. Her comments on engaging with the large number of new faces in the legislature served as a reminder of the ongoing need to educate and advocate.

Ways to Get Involved

When it comes to engaging in advocacy, Mobley emphasized several meaningful opportunities for young professionals to be on the lookout for:

  • Crash the GAC (Governmental Affairs Conference)
  • Crash Hike the Hill
  • Sign up for Action Alerts by texting “CORNERSTONE” to 50457

These opportunities are a gateway for YPs to build networks, grow their leadership skills, and elevate the voice of credit unions.

The session served as both an educational touchpoint and a call to action. Advocacy isn’t just about policies, it’s about people. Whether you’re attending Crash events, staying on top of legislative alerts, or building relationships with lawmakers, your voice matters.

Stay engaged. Stay informed. And remember, advocacy starts with you!
