Why YPs Should Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Read time: 1 min
For many young professionals, including myself, comfort zones are where we feel safe. It’s where tasks all seem familiar, where we can settle into routines, and where everyday expectations are met. Our comfort zone feels good while we are there, but the truth is, it’s rarely where growth happens.
It doesn't matter if you’re early in your career or building momentum in your current role; embracing discomfort is one of the most powerful ways to advance your career. I’ve gained skills, confidence, and opportunities that have helped me shape my professional career.
I had no previous management experience, so when the opportunity came, I was overwhelmed. I lacked the confidence and skills to manage a call center. cuLEAD Academy was a game changer for me and helped me learn that I had to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Through the academy, I learned valuable skills and networked with diverse individuals who shared a wide range of ideas and experiences. After graduating from the program, I decided to push myself further and applied to be a YP Advisor. Although acceptance wasn’t guaranteed, once again, I found myself having to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in order to potentially find success. In the end, I was fortunate enough to have my efforts recognized and was selected as a YP Advisor.
Through my tenure as an advisor, I have become a more confident person and manager. Previously, I didn’t have confidence in the decisions I made for my department, but thanks to the experiences I’ve gained working with others as a YP Advisory, I feel I have the agency to make difficult decisions and stand by my choices. I’m still learning and growing every day, but I'm a different person than I was when I received my promotion.
Growth Requires Discomfort
Growth is often disguised as something foreign: new responsibilities, tough conversations, or even a role you think you might not be ready for. These moments of growth may feel scary, but you can prepare yourself with small and intentional actions like:
- Taking on a Challenge: It can teach you resilience, even if you want to give up.
- Speaking Up: Voice your opinions. This helps build your confidence to always speak up for yourself.
- Try Something New: Step outside of your comfort zone and discover new things.
- Making Mistakes: It’s okay to make mistakes; this is how you learn and evolve.
You don’t have to be fearless; you just must be willing. A great way to begin stepping out of your comfort zone is by registering to be a Credit Union Young Professional (CUYP). To learn more and register to be a CUYP, visit Cornerstone League online today.
