The Cornerstone Foundation continues to empower the credit union movement in 2025 through the strategic distribution of professional development and community-focused grants, along with scholarships for emerging leaders.

Professional Development Grants — $272,936

In 2025, the Foundation has supported nine Cornerstone chapters and 85 credit union training calendars. Grants also funded YP Advisors and Crashers at ELEVATE, CUDE participants, CU FinHealth attendees, and small credit union initiatives.

“Supporting professional development through grants isn’t just about building individual skills — it’s about equipping credit union professionals with the tools they need to drive innovation, expand access, and strengthen the cooperative principles that define our movement,” said Emily Moreno, Foundation program director.

Community Development Grants — $19,500

Four credit unions have received Community Development Grants to support financial wellness and outreach programs tailored to their local needs. With no deadline and one grant awarded per credit union annually, these flexible funds allow credit unions to deliver impact year-round.

SCMS Scholarships — $67,981

56 scholarships were awarded to students in all three years of the Southwest Credit Union Management School (SCMS), helping shape the next generation of credit union leaders.

Among the recipients is Lilly Megias, chief operating officer at South Texas Federal Credit Union, who credited SCMS for contributing to her recent promotion.

“Cornerstone Foundation scholarships empowered me to enroll in SCMS, which deepened my understanding of operations and leadership,” said Megias. “Thanks to the Foundation’s scholarships, I was able to connect with a network of credit union peers, whose shared insights and best practices helped me bring new ideas and strategies to our organization. This collaboration enhanced my ability to adapt to industry challenges and deliver meaningful improvements that benefit our members and community.”

Making It Possible

These initiatives are made possible by the generosity of Foundation donors who believe in the power of credit unions to uplift individuals and communities.
